How can we not have meetings like last night ever again? Can we shift non time sensitive things to the next meeting? Can we put time sensitive things seeking volunteers and other support to early in the meeting and not the 3rd hour (10pm)?

a near full night's sleep and am still exhausted.

The shortest meetings I've seen are ran by a dictator. Someone needs to own the efficiency of the meeting and shut down side conversations and tell people to take certain discussions "offline".

Good point.

I felt like there was some serious inability for people to just let go of adding "one more thing", and as someone who has moderated meetings spread over many eras of Noisebridge, I feel this has become an exceptional trend right now

There shouldn't be a need to be dictatorial. If ppl are popping in and trying to redirect a lot, then they're not getting their needs met outside of the meeting.

Well yes, that's what spinning off discussions should handle

Yes. I was kind of aghast at the general inability of people to cocreate with the group (and with me as moderator) ways to "take this offline"

If you force the moderator to be dictatorial then their emotional energy requirement is way higher and also it will result in fewer actually needed discussions unfolding as they should. I have seen Noisebridge have hour long discussion items that no one complained about because (1) the template items were marched through very efficiently and effectively, making the boring stuff go super fast and (2) the general culture was oriented around saving energy for the important thing.

I feel strongly a clash of values in meetings right now. Perhaps we should start by articulating the point of general meetings. Eg. I don't think it is the goal of general meetings to conclude as quickly as possible.

Two questions: 1. Does NB have anything that can safely drill through sheet metal without it becoming a spinny blade of death? (Not sure thickness but min 26 gauge (0.02 in) max 1/8th inch) 2. Is there a better place to ask general questions that you are not sure where to post?

I can be the benevolent dictator but it'd get me hated for most of the community 😭

Proposal: what if we did reddit style voting on agenda items 24 hours before meeting and it goes in order of that? With an automatic misc item where off topic items are relegated to?

Eh, democracy isn't a universal solution

that doesn't address the actual problems of that meeting.

The problem is very un excellent participants that like hearing themselves talk…

Dear reader, You were given two ears and one mouth. Listen twice as much as you talk. if you find yourself talking more than you are LISTENING, silence yourself. Thank you

yes the more prepared we are before the meeting ideally by posting the info in <#1024714833851076728> channel beforehand to present things in writing for people to look at and consider the less we need to do 20 questions about them

<@690007326312497195> yes brian, properly blocking and clamping material being drilled is safely possible at NB.

A good example is Daniel posting his idea about membership naming in <#1024714833851076728> and everyoen started discussing it immediately beforehand and its been in discussion outside of meeting and inspiring the <#1436087689274462339> project ever since without needing to be a big C consensus the whole time. Posting it got the ball rolling.

Fundraising has meetings outside the main and reports/asks for input during main meeting, this is the pattern for getting things done between meeting and presenting updates briefly and asking for input. <#948260553737007125> has been one of the things making meetings extra long by being discussed during it because we haven't been having proper NB1 6 meetings regularly till way late which is my fault as the ball roller on that one.

So sorry for making longer than necessary for weeks

NB16 planning shouldn't just happen during meeting

no, in fact, it should only really be a place to get calls out for more help

I've been remembering how to do things here progressively weeks after it would have been useful one thing at a time

Just recently returning to NB is a really hard time to suddenly get tasked with a big event project that has to happen in one month!

And I apologize on insisting on the "one more thing" at the end but it was in the spirit of "let's not make finances take as long in future by restoring the Old Ways" of financial reports being on the finances page before meetings https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/finances
LX 22:21:46 UTC

I was writing that in the interest of having a bandaid at least for one of the things that was making the meeting so long before the end of it and <@399173274027687947> was there

that was kind of a "read the room" moment unfortunately. which was hard to do over jitsi perhaps.
